Method 1: Re-enable the device
To fix the problem, follow these steps (Steps below are for your reference. The specific steps in different system versions may be different. ):

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke a Run command. Type devmgmt.msc in the run box and click on OK button.

2) Locate the Sound, video and game controllers category in the list.

If you don’t see this category in your list, continue with step 2a) below. Otherwise skip to step 3.

2a) Click the Action menu and select Add Legacy hardware (if you see only the Help in this menu, click somewhere in the white space around the list (i.e. make sure nothing in the tree is selected), then click the Action menu again)

2b) Click Next to start the Add Hardware wizard. (If the Add Hardware wizard doesn’t display at all, skip to Method 3 below.)

2c) Select Search for and install hardware automatically (Recommended).

2d) If the wizard tells you it can’t find any new hardware, click Next.

2e) You should now see a list of hardware types. Scroll down until you see Sound, video and game controllers. Select it and click Next.

2f) Select the manufacturer and model of your sound card, then click Next. (If you’re not sure what manufacturer and model to select, skip to Method 3 below.)

2g) Click Next to install the device, then when the installation is complete, click Finish.

3) Expand the Sound, video and game controllers category, and right-click on your audio device. Click Enable in the pop up menu. (If the device is already enabled, skip to Method 2 below.)

Method 2: Manually uninstall & reinstall the device driver

1) Still in Device Manager, once again expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click on your audio device, and click Uninstall to uninstall the driver.

2) Restart your PC. After restarting, Windows should automatically re-install the sound driver. Assuming it installs the latest correct driver, this may resolve the problem.

Method 3: Automatically update your audio device drivers

Your sound problem is probably being caused by driver issues. The steps above may resolve it, but if they don’t, or you’re not confident playing around with drivers manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.
You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

1) Download and install Driver Easy. http://www.drivereasy.com/DriverEasy_Setup.exe

2) Run Driver Easy and click Scan Now. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click the Update button next to a flagged audio driver to automatically download and install the correct version of this driver (you can do this with the FREE version). Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

it may not be down to your drivers, there is another problem where windows 8 - 10 could set your sound to HDMI as default device,

if you open control panel and then open sound, in playback tab you can set one of you sound devices to default,

if you are connected by HDMI to your TV then select HDMI for TV , for your audio via PC speakers select audio high definition, choose one that will work.

good luck i would of posted a snapshot, but i have 6 HDMI ports on my PC card, otherwise you could get confused looking at mine....

1.) Run Windows Update once again, let it do its thing, restart as many times as necessary. The purpose of this is to make sure that you have everything up to date from Windows' perspective.

2.) Go to Device Manager in your Control Panel.

Alternatively, you can right click "Computer" or "My Computer"(depending on your Windows version), and then click on Manage. That will also take you to Device Manager.

In the new window, click Device Manager. double click "Sound, video and game controllers". There should be an icon of a speaker.

Also, in the menu bar, go to the View Menu, open it and select "Show hidden devices"

Once you have followed all of the steps above, go to each and every single device that is listed under "Sound, video and game controllers" and manually remove/uninstall all of them.
To achieve that, go to the device that you want removed, right click on it, and select "Uninstall device". If the window that pops will have an option saying "remove software associated with this device", make sure to also tick and select that box.
Basically, you want to remove all of the possible sound devices from your computer.

Once you have uninstalled all of the sound drivers from your computer, you will need to tell your computer to scan for new devices.
In order to achieve that, you will need to click a button on top of your window thta shows a blue icon, as below:

Alternatively, the same effect can be achieved by going into the "Action" menu, and clicking "Scan for hardware changes".

3.)

Download the free version of this software and install of the drivers it finds one by one:

https://www.iobit.com/en/driver-booster.php

Either of the steps above might do the tricks above. For best results, follow all three in the precise order that I have listed them for you.

Best regards,
Adrian
