Problems with my WMP 12 player Reward $1
Created by snickers, 220 days ago, 1295 views

Every time I try to play any song in my WMP 12 in windows 7 I get this message, Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or a required codec might not be installed on your computer. Any help would be greatly appreciate as this has been going on for quite a long time. I even installed VLC media player and I get a similar notice.

@snickers
When dealing with codecs, more does not equal better.
Having the least amount on your system is the best configuration.
This is exactly what these codec releases will do for you.

You will no longer be restricted to using any specific player.
WMP and your Windows Media Center setup will play all your files.

The following filetypes are enabled and SUPPORTED by the installation of Shark's Codec Solutions.
amr | mpc | ofr | divx | mka | ape | flac | evo | flv | m4b | mkv | ogg | ogm | rmvb | xvid| y4m
All of the above filetypes can be queued to the Windows Media Player Playlist using a right-click.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. I downloaded the link you sent and nothing happened once it was downloaded. Now I am not a very tech savvy guy at all but it seemed kind of complicated after looking over the box with all the buttons in it. I wonder if you could maybe explain it a little more extensively as to how I go about using the program. I would appreciate it very much. I have over 3000 songs in my WMP and I can't play any of them, it's very frustrating. Up until a few months ago it worked fine. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Thank you once again for taking the time to reply back with another solution, but unfortunately that didn't work either. I did everything you said and I keep getting this message. "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." I've been at this now for a few months and I am very frustrated. Nothing seems to work but thank you for your help.

In some cases people have run into this error when the wrong audio device is selected in Windows Media Player.
a. Open Windows Media Player.
b. Click on Tools, select Options.
c. Click on Devices, and then select Speakers.
d. Now, select Properties, it will allow you to change it.

Perform System Restore, to return to a previous state – when your computer was functioning correctly. It can also change Internet Explorer settings, scripts, batch files, and other kinds of executable files on your computer.
Note: System Restore does not affect personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

Sorry it took so long getting back to you. I had some personal issues to take care of but I wanted to thank you for your latest answer. Unfortunately that didn't work for me either as my backup hasn't worked for a long time. I am completely stumped as to what else can be done here. It seems nothing I do works. I just wanted to say thank you for all your help and patience with me. I really appreciate it much.

Try these two codec packs. Open the links and follow the instructions to the letter:

To make sure, my advise would be to install both.

@voineaadi Thank you for taking the time to offer another solution but unfortunately for me this link you posted wants money to use their software and at this time I'm a bit short, which is the reason I'm trying to repair this myself or I would take it to a repair shop and be done with it. It seems I've tried every solution and nothing works. I've had so many answers from people who were nice enough to take the time to reply to me but for some reason I can't seem to find the right one, but I do appreciate your help.

K-Lite codecs pack is free, and so is Windows 7 codecs pack.
I don’t know what exactly are you clicking, but the codecs are free.
The solution ti your problem is a very sinple one: download and install the right codecs.

Here's the link you sent to me...https:// www.digitalcitizen.life/play-any-video-format-windows-media-player-12. And when I click on it I get this, which is only part of a full page which is to long to send you. Thanks for your help anyway.

Any Video Format in Windows Media Player 12

Misc by Jack Busch published on 08/24/2010

In terms of file compatibility, Windows Media Player 12 is by far the most ecumenical to date. Where Microsoft once tacitly shunned third-party file types - such as Apple’s Quicktime (.MOV) and DivX - it now supports an impressive number of file types out of the box. Still, avid media enthusiasts will occasionally come across a video file type that Windows Media Player 12 can’t handle natively. Luckily, all you’ll need to for the small fraction of video formats that Microsoft chose not to support from the get go, is a handy codec pack. This tutorial will show you how to install the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, which enables support for virtually every video file type under the sun.

Supported File Types

For your reference, here is a quick list of the video file types that Windows Media Player 12 supports out of the box. If you are having trouble playing one of these file types, you may want to ensure that the file was encoded or downloaded correctly.
•Windows Media files- .wm,.wmv, and.asf;
•AVCHD files (including Dolby Digital audio) -.m2ts and.m2t;
•Apple QuickTime files -.mov and.qt;
•AVI files -.avi;
•Windows Recorded TV Show files -.wtv and.dvr-ms;
•MPEG-4 movie files -.mp4,.mov, and.m4v;
•MPEG-2 movie files -.mpeg,.mpg,.mpe,.m1v,.mp2,.mpv2,.mod, and.vob;
•MPEG-1 movie files-.m1v;
•Motion JPEG files-.avi and.mov.

Unsupported File Types

If you come across a video file type that isn’t supported by Windows Media Player 12, you’ll receive two notifications. First, Windows Media Player 12 will let you know that it doesn’t recognize the file extension and will ask you if you’d like to try to play it anyway.

Windows Media Player 12

If you click Yes, Windows Media Player 12 will try to play it anyway. If it is a case where a supported file type was simply renamed incorrectly, it might play. But chances are you’ll get a message stating that "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file". In either case, the solution is to install the right codec. Click Close to dismiss the window and move on to the next step.

Windows Media Player 12

Installing K-Lite Codec Pack

Now, you could hunt down the appropriate codec each time this happened and install them one at a time as you go. But that’s completely unnecessary and, frankly, a waste of time. Your best bet is to download an all-in-one codec pack and take care of all the video and audio codecs you might need in the future in one fell swoop.

We prefer the K-Lite Codec Pack. It comes in a variety of editions from Basic to Mega, all of which are free. Originally developed for Kazaa Lite users, the K-Lite Codec Pack lets you play practically every video format you might encounter on the Internet in Windows Media Player 12.

You can grab the latest version of K-Lite Codec Pack at codecguide.com. Get the Mega version.

Once it downloads, close your web browsers and Windows Media Player 12 and run the install file. You’ll be brought to the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack setup wizard. Click Next to begin.

FYI, I clicked the link again and the same thing pops up. It's basically about drivers, that what it downloads for me. No codecs. I can only do what the page tells me to. It downloads driver updates then wants to charge me for them.

First check your media extension like .mp4, .wav, .mpeg, .occ or others and search bing/google by term "[extension] supported players . or Download MPC-HC https://mpc-hc.org/ is open Source Player Like VLC. Supported almost all type media[audio,Video].

if still not playing , your file may OS dependent means open only is same Operating System or by same player .
Im saying this, I faced this, I downloaded a PDF on Linux, then try open it in Windows ,It's shows eror, I download several PDF software to open it ,but failed, at least i open back again in linux it's open very well.
