Any time you connect to the Internet you are vulnerable to cyber attacks. Hackers can steal your credit card numbers, tax records and passwords, or even completely disable your PC. Follow these tips to help avoid problems:
1. Create smart and strong passwords. Make it difficult for hackers to crack your password. You can create a smart password by incorporating capital letters, numbers, and special characters, and using more than six characters. An example of a strong password is: Go1dM!n3 .
2. Use email wisely. Email is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, and as a tool to conduct business. Even if you have good security software on your PC, however, your friends and family might not have the same protection. Be careful about what information you submit via email. Never send your credit-card information, Social Security number, or other private information via email.
3. Be smart when using instant messaging (IM) programs. If you use an IM program to communicate with friends and family, be careful about sending any personal information through online communications. Protect yourself by using a nickname for your IM screen name, so your name isn’t identified through IM. Never accept strangers into your IM groups. Be smart about how you use IM at work because your employer has the right to monitor and view your messages.
4. Shop safely. If you plan to order from an online store, be sure that the Web site uses secure technology. When you are at the checkout screen, verify that the Web address begins with https. Also, check to see if a tiny locked padlock symbol appears at the bottom right of the checkout screen, or that there is a statement on the checkout screen stating that the pages are secure with a security technology vendor. Check that the security technology does exist by checking the security technology company’s web site.
5. Watch out for phishing scams. Phishing scams use fraudulent emails and fake web sites, masquerading as legitimate businesses, to lure unsuspecting users into revealing private account or login information. To be safe, if you receive an email from a business that includes a link to a web site, make certain that the web site you visit is legitimate. Instead of clicking through to the site from within the email, open a separate Web browser and visit the business’ web site directly to perform the necessary actions. You can also verify that an email is in fact from a legitimate business by calling the business or agency directly.
6. Fun and carefree online gaming. Internet games are fun for the whole family. Make sure you are careful when playing online games, especially when communicating with other players. Be sure that your security software still functions when you are in gaming mode.
7. Pay attention to your children’s online activities. Keep your home computer in a community area so that you can monitor their activity. Use child software that is age-appropriate. Limit your children’s time spent online. Install and use parental controls software that allows you to monitor your children’s activity online. This will keep your children from accessing undesirable Web sites and sharing personal information via online communications.
8. Subscribe to McAfee computer security service. Keeping you and your family safe whenever you power on your computer,
McAfee’s comprehensive security software is always active—updating and protecting wherever you go online. McAfee products offer the latest and best combination of software, providing consumers and their home computers with unparalleled, comprehensive protection from cyberspace threats like viruses ,
spyware, adware , spam and identity theft.

In this world of ubiquitous computers and persistent threats from hackers, protecting your computer is a must. The key pathway through which malware attacks the system is the Internet and its popular service, the Web.

There are numerous ways to protect and remove malware from our computers. No one method is enough to ensure your computer is secure. The more layers of defense, the harder for hackers to use your computer. Here are five simple, but critical steps to protect your computer,

Install Firewall

Install Antivirus Software

Install Anti-Spyware Software

Use Complex and Secure Passwords

Check on the Security Settings of the Browser

Install Firewall

A firewall enacts the role of a security guard. There are of two types of firewalls: a software firewall and hardware firewall. Each serves similar, but different purposes. A firewall is the first step to provide security to the computer. It creates a barrier between the computer and any unauthorized program trying to come in through the Internet. If you are using a system at home, turn on the firewall permanently. It makes you aware if there are any unauthorized efforts to use your system.

Install Antivirus Software:
Antivirus is one other means to protect the computer. It is software that helps to protect the computer from any unauthorized code or software that creates a threat to the system. Unauthorized software includes viruses, keyloggers, trojans etc. This might slow down the processing speed of your computer, delete important files and access personal information. Even if your system is virus free, you must install an antivirus software to prevent the system from further attack of virus.
Antivirus software plays a major role in real time protection, its added advantage of detecting threats helps computer and the information in it to be safe. Some advanced antivirus programs provide automatic updates, this further helps to protect the PC from newly created viruses.
Antivirus for Windows 8 software may include advanced features such as email protection, blocking of pop-ups and identity theft.

Install Anti-Spyware Software:
spySpyware is a software program that collects personal information or information about an organization without their approval. This information is redirected to a third party website. Spyware are designed in such a way that they are not easy to be removed. Anti-Spyware software is solely dedicated to combat spyware. Similar to antivirus software, anti-spyware software offers real time protection. It scans all the incoming information and helps in blocking the threat once detected. Comodo Free Antivirus comes with spyware protection built in.

Use Complex and Secure Passwords:
passwordThe first line of defence in maintaining system security is to have strong and complex passwords. Complex passwords are difficult for the hackers to find. Use a password that is at least 8 characters in length and include a combination of numbers, letters that are both upper and lower case and a special character. Hackers use certain tools to break easy passwords in few minutes. One recent study showed that a 6 character password with all lower case letters can be broken in under 6 minutes!

Check on the Security Settings of the Browser:
Browsers have various security and privacy settings that you should review and set to the level you desire. Recent browsers give you ability to tell web sites to not track your movements, increasing your privacy and security.

Use a HIPS security solution. Basically Hips monitors the behavior of malicious software trying to run on your system. This has great advantages over anti-virus softwares that detect using only signature based methods.

Hi @mazeal

For home computers and medium level office computers, it is easy to keep your self safe from external treats.

1) Install a good total security software like Avast or Bit defender. This will cover your firewall, anti virus, malware and anti rootkits.

2) Keep a anti malware software like Malware byte to scan manually once a week. Because, most commonly faces problem by the user are PUP and malware. It is mandatory to keep good anti malware always.

3) A good cleaner tool to clear tracking cookies headache.

1. Your actions and

2. The kind of software you use

Activate the firewall in your system and install a good antivirus.

Do not open any kind of website that you are not sure of, such websites don't have the trusted Keylock sign on the search bar.

Such websites that a malicious usually contain freebies like free software, free games, free applications, all downloadable. Avoid them.

Set your browser to notify you of untrusted websites and when notified always click the "Don't allow" tab to prevent such websites from loading.

Finally, always update your antivirus when prompted. Good luck!

Hi @mazeal
The Q is very general and I assume it's for your personal or home use only. Consider the following:

1) Before you exploit any suspicious software, please check your system (PC/MAC/LINUX/..etc) first for any possible breach.
This is to make sure your own system is not contaminated and infect other clean applications that can be innocent.

> Recommend do a free cloud scan of your system from some popular brands. If possible include Boot and offline email software scan too.

2) After point 1. and your system is clean, remove ALL browsers add-on or extensions that are not necessary especially
those not used often and not from needed software (eg. MS Office, antivirus, ...etc). Delete / Erase ALL History, Data and Cookies from all browsers.
Some 3rd Party add-ons / extensions serve as spyware or adware collecting illegal data whenever using the internet.

> Recommend to use only 1 type of popular browsers (eg. Chrome), at most 3 type for backup purposes. should the rest fail due to software compatibility issues.

3) Most popular antivirus software should serve a good job in preventing infection on your system. However prefer if
they include internet, spam/spyware, email and firewall protections. Just antivirus protection might not be enough
due to complexity of hackers, viruses and malware.

1) Install or use VPN is recommended if added privacy is required during web surfing. Otherwise use browsers in Privacy or Incognito mode is sufficient.

1) There is no 100% foolproof protection despite using the best antivirus/internet protection software.

2) Proper preventive and practices of end users are most important. Such as opening unknown emails with attachments, install unauthorised 3rd party software (without onsite antivirus / internet protection software),... etc

3) Each system are different and this might not be a 1 solution to your needs when executing the above points.

This is a general guide and if need any software recommendations please message or state here your current system specs for reference. Hope these are useful and not too technical (yet)...

Best regards :)

Download and install an Ant-Virus. This will help protect your computer against any viruses trying to attack your computer from things that may come from a downloaded file or from suspicious websites on the internet. I would recommend downloading Avast, because it is the best one that I have used for Ant-Virus and I have been working with computers for years now. If that doesn't help, read the reviews online.

You could also try downloading a VPN, which a virtual private network (VPN) is a technology that creates an encrypted connection over a less secure network.

Here are some useful links to help solve your problem!
